In this session the extraordinary role this tiny, rural upstate NY community played in the national struggle against slavery will be examined. Today Peterboro is home to the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum. These tell the story of one of the most significant sites of 19th century American history.
Thomas Bennett, in addition to being a long time CNYCSS Board member and a former Jamesville-Dewitt Social Studies teacher, has participated and spoken at many other events.
-Participated in a panel presentation at a National Underground Railroad Conference sponsored by the National Park Service held at Niagara University
-Over the last seven years have been a speaker at the Martin Luther King annual commemoration at Colgate University
-Was an educational advisor and trip chaperone/teacher each year for ten years with former NYS Senator Nancy Lorraine Hoffmann's Civil Rights Connection project, which took students from a diverse group of high schools in her election district to learn about the civil rights movement and perform community service activities in Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Georgia
